Dead Bird (2007)
In June, 2004, a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher accidentally flew into my living room window, effectively killing herself. I documented the corpse immediately after the crash, filling my digital camera memory card—a total of 114 photographs. A selection of 49 of these images, entitled Dead Bird, was paired with my documentation of the Magnificent Corpses book for a solo exhibition at Patrick Mikhail Gallery, Ottawa in 2006.
Who would have thought that death could be so beautiful? In the spirit of the memento mori artistic tradition, this still-life collection serves as a reminder of our mortality.
