Magic Boxes I Couldn't Bring Myself To Flock (2010/11)
Magic Boxes I Couldn't Bring Myself To Flock
I was drawn to the flocking in the Magic Box series not only by the lustrous way it catches the light, but also by its homogenizing effect, how it visually merges disparate components. Like all my work, however, the boxes were subject to process—I made a multitude of choices over a period of time. My intention was to flock all the pieces in that series, but in the end I couldn’t, considering that these combinations stood exceptionally well on their own.
This current oeuvre had its genesis in the early 1990s with a set of works that I created during grad school. The Reliquary Box series consisted of 10 separate wall-mounted pieces, some with text, all displaying found objects within shallow shadow-box formats. The new work doesn’t display things in boxes, but upon them; juxtaposing found objects with found wooden boxes.
